A Craigslist economy

11.06.07 | 2 Comments

Ok, so it’s a little pathetic that Joe and I grilled two hot dogs last night. I would argue that it’s a little less pathetic than Parker Posey’s character in Waiting for Guffman, Libbie Mae Brown, grilling a single chicken-wing. Hey, at least we included some vegetables. What’s more important is that we’re actually making food at our house which is not equipped with a kitchen of any sort. Yes, no oven, stove, or even a kitchen sink (well we have one it’s just not hooked up). As you may recall, Cooking with the Pan’s Brett Mackie used a blow-torch to toast some figs, and until last night that’s the only heat source we could harness.

Thanks to the genius behind the online garage sale called Craigslist, we were able to snag a big Coleman grill for a fraction of the cost it would have taken to procure a new one. A very nice guy named Kevin was pimping out his backyard grilling set-up and we were the beneficiaries. The best part about it is that the grill purchase was funded by Joe off-loading a few pieces of his old furniture - also on Craigslist - over the weekend. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure, indeed!

Looks like there will be more things on the grill than just hot dogs in the coming months. Our neighbor, Christopher tells us our figs taste delicious grilled and smoked with fig leaves. We’ll have to give that a try.
